Long Lasting & Low Maintenance: TimberTech® Decking from Warehouse ’71

“I don’t like to do things three times. I don’t mind doing it twice, but replacing my replacement? I’m not too keen on that.”

Jeffrey Symm and his wife built their North Carolina home in 1991. After turning their original deck into a three-season porch, they built another deck in 2010. They used pressure-treated wood on their 2010 deck, just like they had on their original deck.

But this time he noticed a difference. Even though he was using a multi-year sealer and sealing his deck every two years, boards were rotting. He was starting to replace boards, and he knew he’d eventually have to start replacing his replacement boards.

The hard work he was putting in to maintaining his wooden deck just wasn’t paying off the way he wanted it to.

“Think about this, on a step, on a piece of wood, you’ve got a big hole that’s rotted out. Those are the kinds of things I was replacing, and I just said. ‘This deck started out beautiful and now it looks like this.’ It was frustrating.”

He was ready for a change. That’s when he started researching decking materials. He talked to a carpenter who recommended TimberTech. He compared it to other brands, but “TimberTech just flat out looked better. It looked like wood. Everything about it just looked right.”

Beyond the look, Jeffrey was happy to learn that the Azek line didn’t include wood chips, which can expand.

“No matter what I looked at, I kept coming back to TimberTech because of the look and the way it worked. I’d worked with other stuff before, but I liked the fact it had no wood or wood chips.”

Great Composite Decking for a Great Price

Jeffrey planned his new deck with the long-term in mind.

“I’m going to do this job one more time. How do I make it brighter, easier to manage, and something I’ll look at and still like in 10 years? I always felt that the only way to make money is to save it. Earn it, save it, have it. I like to keep my things.”

Quality and durability were important, but so was price.

“The Big Box stores had their displays but not the knowledge. The dealers had knowledge and displays, but pricing was an issue.”

A chance encounter directed him to Warehouse ’71.

“At one of the stores a contractor overheard me and recommended Warehouse ‘71. After talking to the team at Warehouse ‘71, I knew it was the solution I had been looking for.”

He found the high-quality decking he needed at a price he could feel good about.

“They had 20’ boards with 7-1/4” widths and all of the other items I needed, at a reasonable cost. We saved around 45% off the cost overall, had I simply bought from the usual places.”

Building a Bright, Modern TimberTech Deck

Along with the decking materials, he made a few other changes to the deck design for both aesthetic and safety reasons. He made wider, sit-down stairs with a Dark Hickory border. He didn’t want to add more railings and used the Dark Hickory border as a safety and design cue.

His light, Cypress TimberTech boards added brightness and coordinated beautifully with the exterior of his home.

The bright white risers not only added a crisp, modern look but also provided better nighttime visibility with his LED lights.

High-quality finishing touches also made a big difference.

“Putting plugs over the screws—I would have thought it was ‘Oh, ok, that’s good.’ I put them in, ‘Nah, that ain’t good, that is amazing.’”

It all adds up to a high-quality, durable deck that’s worth the investment.

“The level of knowledge and advice from Warehouse ’71 was instrumental in getting the results we achieved.”

Cleaning Deck “As Easy as Cleaning My Car”

Time-intensive maintenance was a big issue with his pressure-treated wooden deck. Spending two days cleaning and sealing a deck that still ended up rotting—and not looking truly clean and bright even after it was all done—was a big frustration.

Now when he cleans his deck, it looks fresh and bright—in a fraction of the time.

“I did this in about a half an hour. Same-sized deck as what I had before, but I did it in a half an hour instead of two days of cleaning and sealing.

It was simple. It was impressive. I don’t have to do a lot of stuff I had to do before. I’ll wash the deck like I wash my car. The smile on my face is me knowing I don’t have to clean it again in that old way.

Knowing what I know now, I’m going to be telling everybody in my family: ‘Skip that wooden deck and go straight to the TimberTech one and get it from Warehouse’71!’"
